Flower Production and How We Keep Our Prices Low All Year Round

MDFM receives flowers all the time. This is not an uncommon remark from flower companies. Why do you hear this all the time? And why is this more true from MDFM than most other flower companies?

Fresh flower are the only real perishable in the world of commercial products sold. You can freeze or cool food and in respect to fruit, one can control ripening and have apples stay fresh for months through ethylene control.

Fresh flowers have a very short storage life before use by the consumer to get a reasonable vase life of one to two weeks.

It is therefore imperative that fresh flowers get from the grower to the consumer in the shortest time possible. And that fresh flowers sit in coolers briefly waiting for you the customer ad that we rotate our inventory constantly.

MDFM specialty is behind the scenes.

Only about 15% of every fresh flower in the USA comes from the USA. The other 85% of every fresh flower you see comes from outside the border. And with the shelf life of fresh flowers, these imported flowers come in by airplanes. From around the world.

Perhaps with this knowledge you will appreciate the flower business a bit more. Who would ever think about the business behind fresh flowers. Or where fresh flowers come from? They are just there! And how much do they have to cost!?

I'll give you an example:

Roses are grown in Kenya, Africa in greenhouses. It cost millions to build the greenhouses to grow quality roses or any other flowers. We need greenhouses to grow a quality commercial rose that you can enjoy for a week or two. After harvesting a new rose every 6-8 weeks from the bush we need employees to cut the rose, process the rose and fly the rose to the European Auctions for repacking and potential sale to customers around the world. Again by airplanes. The right roses will be send to the USA by airplane and stored in warehouses in Miami for example. Miami is the foremost distribution center for flower for the USA. Within days the roses will be send to wholesalers around the country and directly to our stores. We usually ship by commercial truck and sometimes planes. We need about 2 days to have the roses strengthen up after all the travel to be ready for your consumption.

"And how do we sell theses roses for only $9,99 a dozen!!"

Constant attention to quick and smooth transport of the roses. Ultimate packing methods and maximum efficiency in our greenhouses and distribution points. And Volume. And we are not greedy.

We are happy making some profit and with control from production to consumer we will keep our prices pretty much the same throughout the year. No surges around the Holidays because w do not have to rely on producers and middleman that try to maximize profits over the back of consumers when consumers think they really need the product. It is after all a market of supply and demand.

We do ask you to buy flowers on a more consistent basis throughout the year. Just because. For no reason than to enjoy a fresh bouquet this weekend. These are the best flowers anyway.

You start using flowers more regular and we cover you around the holidays.
